MEDIA RELEASE: History uneartherd at Chermside
16 September, 2009
History unearthed at Chermside.
Six posts near the ‘Kerry Fein’ pathway have been found to be remnants of the Chermside Cattle Dip/Scour. Although the exact age is not known, it was clearly in existence during the 1920-30’s.
The Chermside and District Historical Society and Council’s Local Assets Services officers made the finding in early August during rehabilitation works. Since then, Council’s Heritage Unit and the Chermside & District Historical Society have been investigating the history of the posts.
“It’s exciting that these important remnants of our past can be uncovered as they have significant historical value for the local area,” Cr King said.
“The discovery of this cattle dip is integral to Marchant Ward’s history. This is quite possibly the only surviving reminder of this type of local industry and the Historical Society has been searching for its whereabouts for some time” she said.
The structure at 980 Gympie Rd, between Downfall Creek and the Kerry Fein Pathway, wasn’t visible to a passer by until recently.
“Council was previously unaware of the posts until trimming of the scrub near the pathway and creak was undertaken during the end of July early August,” Cr King said.
The posts will be left as they were found until further investigation determines the best way to preserve and showcase the posts.
